We have forever sought the fountain of youth and the Phoenix tears that heal all ills. We have not yet found either one. But what follows is a compendium of attempts at cures for much of what ails us.

We are mostly made up of water. Water is the stuff of life. The first treatment for any mystery malaise should almost always be water.

There are those who say that they will sleep when they are dead. And then they wander around feeling half dead. You must sleep to refresh yourself.

You do not suffer from a lack of crackers and beer. You may suffer if you do not eat enough vegetables.

That’s pretty much it for the run of the mill life changing habits that will improve the lives of almost anyone who does more of them

Smoking

Binge Drinking

Drug Abuse

Having children out of wedlock

Sex with bisexual intravenous drug abusers

Sex with multiple partners

I am sure that for some, the last three are controversial. But it is simple fact that most of the poverty that exists in the world comes from people having children they cannot afford to raise. However, since it is politically incorrect to say so the misery that comes with having children you cannot afford to raise continues.

For women, sex with a bisexual man who is also an intravenous drug abuser is a death sentence. You can take political correctness to the grave.

Having sex with prostitutes or people who act like prostitutes virtually assures that you are going to catch something.

The magic happens here….

Let us say that we want to do anything we want and still live forever. What is on the horizon to enable us to do just that?

Every time scientists do a careful, peer reviewed study on vitamin supplements, they don’t find that they do much good.

If you read the literature carefully often you will see something like there should be effects, or there can be effects or that we expect to see effects but the definitive proof is not in.

If you think it works it does. The placebo effect does not work for everything all the time but when it can lessen suffering, why not use it?

You might think that a fake pill that makes a symptom worse is a bad idea. But it all depends on what the circumstances are. For instance, supposed you are trying to kick an addiction. A doctor convinces you that the pill he has just given you will make you sick if you, for instance, have another alcoholic drink. You drink the booze and get sick as a dog. But the there was no drug. It was a sugar pill. Mission accomplished.

There are people who believe that diseases cannot live in a human body that is made more alkaline. They advocate eating foods or drinking liquids that will supposedly bring down the ph of your blood. But consider what would happen if you drank or ate something that was slightly alkaline. Wouldn’t your stomach, which is filled with an acid, just make more acid and neutralize the alkaline substance? Unless the promoters of alkaline products have a way to get them past the stomach and yet still be absorbed by the body, it seems unlikely that any benefit could come from alkaline substances.

One of the more interesting assertions by those who say alkalinity helps are studies that show that germs may be inhibited by ionized or alkaline water outside of the body. I for one am making no claims on this subject one way or another. However, if peer reviewed, clinical studies do find some efficacy, then by all means, use ionized or alkaline water to sterilize objects outside the body. However, unless there is some safe way to by-pass the stomach, it is hard to see how any of these effects can be introduced into the blood stream.

Some scientists are using viruses to hunt, pursue or kill other viruses. This seems like a cool idea but there have been some problems with using the methods and some fear that in trying to cure one problem we may be causing others.

Another idea is to use viruses to act as agents for gene therapy. Again, this is something that sounds like a dream come true when it comes to changing misbehaving genes, however, it could also have terrible consequences if not properly handled. It’s one thing to reformat a computer’s hard drive. But reformatting a living human could be quite messy.

Scientists are looking at using laser light pulses to shake viruses to death by making them resonate with harmful harmonics

Speaking of sound, recently, scientists have looked into listening to bacteria with nano speakers. Imagine being able to hear a microbe invading a cell. This might bring on a whole new kind of therapy. Suppose you played back the sound a microbe invading a cell. Could you make microbes think they had already invaded a cell when they hadn’t? If so, could you make them sit around and starve to death?

On the other hand, suppose you could catch on a nanoscopic level, the sound of a virus invading a cell. Supposed you played back the inverse of that sound. Could you inhibit viral invasion by making cells vibrate at frequencies that viruses find unpalatable?

Scientists are discovering substances, surfaces and even lights that will create cleaner surfaces than we have ever had in the past. This might be useful in surgery, food preparation and even in the offices and bathrooms. Imagine a world of surfaces that cannot pass on germs. As an aside, an easy way to slow the spread of germs in the wintertime might be to mandate trash cans at the exit of every bathroom and to make all toilets, faucets, urinals and sinks touchless. Some more handsanitizer in the bathroom and just outside might help too.

Many think that boosting the body’s immune system would be a good thing. The problem is to use science to do it and not quackery.

Every natural substance and secretion should be tested for antibacterial and antiviral properties. All herbs, plants, animals, rocks and fungi must be involved. This is particularly true for anything new that is found like the tubeworms that live at volcanic vents. Certainly exotic animals that produce toxins such as poison tree frogs and box jellyfish must be exploited.

The gene sequencing projects that are going on around the world could be used to help diagnose and cure diseases.

Computers also allow the correlation of massive amounts of data on side effects, effectiveness, and methodology. In the future computers should be able to use all this information to synthesize new drugs and to extrapolation new cures. Computers will be able to characterize cellular structure and the structure of pathogens and match one for one a pathogen with a chemical cure.

Some scientists are tapping into the all the available computer power, brain power, and observational skills of the public at large to solve problems that might otherwise be either too big to solve or might take too long. Consider for instance, there might be thousands, or millions, or even more ways that a problem could be looked at. If you could formulate the problem into a game that billions around the world could play, they could through play find a solution that might evade scientists for a long time.

The stem cells associated with a fetus and with the umbilical cord can in theory become any tissue in the body. Scientists are finding more sources and less controversial sources than umbilical tissue for stem cells. The hope that is that degenerative diseases and conditions will be treatable with stem cells.

It may be possible to draw cells from a person and treat those cells in such a way as to cure the person by re-injecting the treated cells.

There are several different strategies to pay for a cure. One is offer prize money. Another is to have a kind of stock market wherein people bet on types of cures or whether one method will eventually work whereas another will not. For instance, gene therapy versus laser therapy. Competitions on who can build the best component for a specific kind of cure the fastest or the best are also possible.

We can still get our cures the old fashion way. Use a treated dose of dead viruses to create immunity to live viruses.

Certainly we have to use every edible vegetable known to man to cure ourselves and keep ourselves healthy. It is also well know that a variety of vegetables can be a very good thing. But it might, in addition, be possible to use plants and animals to produce the drugs we need. It would be even nicer if they could be made to produce the drugs in an edible form.

Just as we are studying our own genome to find new ways to detect and cure our illnesses, so must we study our enemies, the germs and viruses to find new ways to kill them. How do they behave? What do they like? What do they hate? Are they substances that only the disease vectors make that can easily turned into poisons that will kill the disease causers and only the causers? Could we bar all the biological entry points with something harmless to us so that viral keys will no longer work in our biological locks? Could we make the viruses of the world think that there is something one hell of lot tastier than us?

Is it the magic silver bullet for viruses? Only time will tell. It is a medicine that targets the double stranded RNA that exists in viruses but not in us and then DRACO tells the virus to commit suicide. DRACO stands for Double-stranded RNA Activated Caspase Oligomerizers. As per usual, scientists are saying, wait ten years for it. Let’s hope they can speed this one up. If this stuff works both the common cold and HIV might be history.

In mythology, Draco is a Dragon. In this the year of the Dragon, perhaps this is a good portent.

Unless you are a gullible member of an ancient tribe, skip the faith healing.

Unless you are gullible member of a New Age tribe, skip the psychic healing.

On the other hand, as long as the “treatment” is not expensive, and as long you keep seeing a licensed medical practitioner and following his advice anyway, a little placebo effect from your crystals or auras to ease the nausea might not hurt anything. Ask your doctor to be sure.

The Lord helps those who help themselves. Pray that what the doctor does works. Have faith that it will and pray for a miracle if it doesn’t. What could it hurt?

If your government is using your tax dollars to build a huge medical bureaucracy then your government is literally killing you. All that money should be used to eradicate disease. That money should not be used to give the government life and death power over you or to give the government veto power over your doctor.

After your government has balanced its budget and paid all its bills, then it can come back and ask your permission to do more. Until then, demand your tax dollars back and use them on research wipe out all illnesses.

Government is all about keeping you just healthy enough to be a vehicle for transporting diseases from one place another. By the way, one of the things that keep discoveries like DRACO off the shelf for ten years or more is government red tape.
